Weight loss is not a goal, it’s a result of being intentional with your eating.
I was talking to a very dear friend just yesterday about this very subject. When dining out with friends, she can’t resist not ordering the tastiest (unhealthiest) item on the menu. As a result, she hates how her clothes are fitting and come next week she plans to start KETO— which by the way she did last year, and here we are again.
When it comes to weight loss or body dysmorphia we fall into these “short-sighted” traps (i.e. FAD diets & dangerous food restrictions) which in the long-term never gets to the root of the problem or goal.
In my friend’s case, her clothes not fitting were blinding her to what was really going on. I recognized it immediately because 10 years ago I was in the same situation. My self-worth was wrapped up in a perfect number on the weight scale and a size 2 jean. What we both needed was a healthier relationship with food.
My intuitive personal training brain recognized this was an emotional subject for her. Like her, me, and most any woman I know we’ve all felt the societal pressure to look a certain way. When we aren’t conforming to these erroneous standards we feel like we are failing at life.
So, my approach was simple:
Just make your current intentions of eating out at restaurants match up with how you want to feel in clothes.
This powerful intentional step would put her back in control over her eating that could then be a mainstay in her life.
For complete clarity over her eating habits, I suggested mindfully journaling at mealtimes. The journal would provide a complete overview of all her unhealthy eating triggers and behaviors so she could tackle each one separately.
To formulate healthier social outings with friends she can reflect back into her life on when the type of meal she ordered became equally important to the company of good friends. Was there a negative shift in her life? Now the shift caused her eating to take on another meaning for her other than survival?
By asking these poignant questions you too can dump the bogus weight loss goals in order to gain back your sanity over your eating.
